Allergy Fighting Smoothie

Spring has come early in the bay. All the flowers are blooming and pollen is rampaging through the streets dusting everything a nice shade of yellow. During this time, I try to sneak a teaspoon of bee pollen and/or local raw honey into our breakfasts.

What are allergies?

To fix allergies, we first need to know how they work. If you have an allergic reaction to something, your body has developed an immune response to the allergen. This creates antibodies. The antibodies activate certain receptors on your cells to release histamine. (If you've ever looked for allergy medication, then you know you're looking for an anti-histamine) Histamines are what cause your stuffy nose, watery eyes, sneezing etc. And, bee pollen reduces histamines!

This is a rudimentary explanation, here's something a little more scientific.

Plus, Bee pollen is not only an excellent way to fight allergies, it's also a super-food. It's a complete protein that aids in the recovery from chronic illness, helps reduces cravings, regulates intestines, builds new blood, fights disease, and even has antibiotic properties.

Depending on your sensitivity level you can take up to 3 tablespoons a day. Gradually work your way up to that. It's best to take pollen with food - especially fruit. The fruit fibers will help activate the pollen. So, smoothies are the perfect vehicle.

Ideally, you'll want to start taking the pollen 6 weeks before your allergies start; so, you can build up an immunity. But, there's no time like the present. I bought my bee pollen at rainbow grocery in bulk. Check with your local co-op or health food store to see if they carry it. Bee pollen will keep in the fridge for a year.

If you are allergic to bee stings, proceed with caution. You could have an allergic reaction to bee pollen.

But, let's talk about the other ingredients in this immune boosting smoothie. Both fruits are very high in vitamin C. One cup of pineapple has 131% of your vitamin C daily value, and one mango has 80% of your daily vitamin C.  Mangoes are also very high in Vitamin A, vital to a healthy immune system.

Justin prefers not to mix fruits and veggies in his smoothies. But, this would be fabulous with two large handfuls of spinach. It would add an extra nutritious punch. Or even a carrot for a little extra beta-carotene.

Homemade Dry Shampoo

Do you want to know my secret to having fab hair and extending to a weekly wash? Two words - Dry. Shampoo.

Dry shampoo has been buzzing around for quite for some time. But, just in case you haven't heard of this magical product, it helps keep your hair full of life and free of grease between washes. At the drug store it typically comes in a powder or spray form. You dust or spray your oily roots with the powder, let it sit for a minute or two and then massage it in. The powder will help absorb the excess oil in your hair and give your some lift at the root.  You're left with clean, voluminous looking hair. And, no one has to know you slept in instead of washing your hair.

Sleep > Hair

I first discovered dry shampoo while doing Gypsy. My hair was looking a little oily for the performance and someone handed me a bottle of baby powder. It was MAGICAL.... other than the fact I smelled like baby powder. There's something about the smell of baby powder that makes me want to vomit.

Next time I saw my stylist, I asked her about something similar. She recommended a fabulous product that gave a lot of lift to the root too. Southern girls do love big hair. But, at $30 for a small bottle there had to be a better way. For a while I used just organic cornstarch which does a fine job, but I found that it faded quickly and did not cling to the roots as much as I would like. But, I'm happy to announce; I have found an awesome recipe!

Dry Shampoo

5 minutes

  • 1 Tablespoon Bentonite Clay
  • 1 Tablespoon Organic Cornstarch or Arrowroot Powder
  • 1 Tablespoon of Cocoa Powder

I keep it in a salt and pepper shaker for easy application. If you have light colored hair, omit the cocoa powder.

To apply the dry shampoo you'll want to section your hair. I always part my hair a little bit further left and sprinkle. Then I part it a little too far to the right and sprinkle. Then I save the crown for last. By sprinkling the powder underneath the greasy hair you're also adding a little extra lift to your hair. We all know that hair can become quite limp when greasy - and no one wants that!
