18 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day at Home

Happy Earth Month everyone! This Earth Month is going to look a lot different than year’s past. I’m bummed that many of the parades, events, workshops, and talks are going to be canceled this year.

But, I hope that many families will still be celebrating at home so I wanted to round up a few ways that you can put the Earth first from the comfort of your own home.

And, once we’re able to move about freely again then please check out all of my tips on celebrating Earth Month all year long.

18 ways to celebrate earth day at home from www.goingzerowaste.com #zerowaste #sustainable #gogreen #earthday #earthmonth #celebrate

While it’s great to have a day on the calendar to mark the celebration of our home, shouldn’t we be grateful for our planet every day of the year?

After all, the planet provides us with delicious plants for food, trees to build our homes, plants to turn into gorgeous pieces of clothing, metals to make cell phones - I mean - when you think about it, our planet has done some pretty cool stuff for us… you know?

This post was sponsored all thoughts and opinions are my own. Some of the links below are affiliate links for more information please see my disclosure policy.

while working from home:

get cozy while planting trees:

I’m currently trying to strike the balance between pajamas and what I’m calling comfy-work-from-home-chic.

Anyone else? I’m working on a full blog post and YouTube video coming out later this month, but I had to include one of my favorite brands in this post, Tentree.

Tentree plants 10 trees for every single purchase made, and they’ve planted over 42 MILLION trees all over the world in countries like the US, Madagascar, Nepal, Indonesia, etc.

Currently, I’ve been living in their Laurel pants which are very chic, but crazy comfortable. They’re made from 100% TENCEL™ Lyocell which is a zero-waste fabric.

All of tentree’s products are made using eco-friendly, sustainable, and/or recycled materials, but they recently launched their most sustainable collection yet.

It’s made from Fair Trade Cotton which is also Cradle-to-Cradle certified! A Cradle to Cradle product can break down and go back into a biological or technical cycle—through compost or other materials. This way, there is no waste and protects the health of our planet.

keep your feet toasty - naturally:

When it comes to work-from-home clothing, there’s one very important often-overlooked part - your footsies! Now, it’s still pretty chilly and rainy here so I’m wearing socks and slippers all-day-every-day.

I have a few pairs of cozy-indoor-socks, as well as a cozy pair of slippers.

I’ve been working from home for over two years now, and this might sound a little nuts, but I can’t wear my indoor-socks during work hours.

When it’s working time; it’s slippie time.

There’s something about wearing shoes, even if they’re slippers that make me feel more productive.

Nootkas Naturals makes soft, cozy, warm, hand felted slippers for both men and women that are breathable and naturally odor-resistant.

Their shoes are both biodegradable and compostable as they’re made from responsibly sourced New Zealand wool that’s 100% uncolored and un-dyed wool.

while in the bedroom:

getting snuggly:

We spend about a third of our lives in bed so organic sheets is really important to me. I’ve had a set of SOL Organics sheets for two years now and am so happy with the quality.

Their sheets are organic, fair trade, and they use no plastic packaging for shipping, but my favorite part of the company is their giveback. They donate $7.50 from each sale goes to one of the 4 charities they've partnered with.

I fell in love with linen sheets a few years back because linen is antibacterial so if you suffer from acne (like me!) switching to linen sheets and pillowcases have made a huge difference in my skin.

SOL Organics new linen collection is made from 100% European flax linen. It's naturally hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, and stonewashed for softness. If you’re interested in giving these sheets a try you can use the code ’GZW25’ to get 25% off your purchase.

on your bedside table:

Looking for a little light reading before bed? Then you should check out 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste. It’s a super easy to digest handbook full of 101 tips. You can read it cover to cover or just jump to the page/question that you need to read.

It’s the handbook I wish I had when I started going zero waste. It’s kind, non-judgmental and full of tips, tricks, and never before seen recipes.

The book is completely plastic-free and printed on recycled paper and the cover is forest service certified paper. FSC certified forests meet the highest environmental and social standards, but of course, it’s also available via eBook and audiobook!

And, if it couldn’t get any better proceeds from each book go to support Plastic Pollution Coalition.

while working out:

get outside and enjoy nature:

More than ever, getting out of the house for a short walk with Nala feels like the best thing in the world. When working from home there’s no water cooler or the ability to walk around the office so it can be pretty easy to stay seated all day long.

Make sure that you’re taking a little bit of time too get out and enjoy the fresh air. Take a walk around the block and appreciate all the nature around you.

Check out this post, if you’re looking for a guide to sustainable and ethical workout clothes. A few of my favorites are Girlfriend Collective, Prana, and Icebreaker.

7+ethical+and+sustainable+active+wear+brands+from+www.goingzerowaste.jpeg

fresh air and safety first:

During this time, I’ve been trying to leave the house outside of peak hours to avoid crowds. Justin and I have been going on walks around dusk, and I’ve been wanting to start jogging again.

But, I’ve been wanting something reflective or bright to wear since I’ll be going in the evening. I’m super intrigued by these Sports Arm Sleeves from Rockay.

Both their sleeves and performance socks are made from ECONYL® which is a fabric made from recycling ocean waste, fishing nets, and landfill fabrics.

And, 10% of Rockay’s sales on Earth Day are being donated to oceana.org to support their efforts in cleaning and preserving our oceans. It's our way of giving back to our environment.

e0a10253-min.jpeg

while cleaning:

stop microplastics from getting into our waterways:

A lot of our clothing, but specifically activewear is made from synthetic fibers like polyester. If you’re buying sustainable brands, a lot of those fibers are made from recycled plastic water bottles.

While I think it’s great that we’re reclaiming those materials, it’s important that we make sure microplastic fibers aren’t going out to the waterways.

One of the best ways to prevent that from happening is to use a cora ball, and you can pick one up from one of my favorite zero-waste retailers Earth Hero!

Earth Hero is a one-stop-shop for everything sustainable. They have the largest selection of eco-friendly products and the best part is they price match so you’re guaranteed to get the best deal around.

They’re also a certified B Corporation and a member of 1% for the planet so they give back a portion of their proceeds to environmental organizations.

As a bonus, you can get 10% off with the coupon code ‘GOZERO’.

Cora-Ball-Microfiber-Laundry-Ball-4-min.jpg

ditch the paper towels:

When it comes to cleaning, one of the most common items I find in waste audits is paper towels so why not switch to a reusable alternative.

Swedish Wholesale makes Swedish Dishcloths which replace both sponges and paper towels. Each Swedish dishcloth can replace 15-17 rolls of paper towels which means you’ll be saving a lot of money and trees.

You can wash Swedish Dishcloths in the dishwasher or washing machine. When they’re dry they’re flat and can be stiff and scrubby by nature.

However, as soon as they get wet, they become spongy and malleable and are able to absorb up to 20x their weight in liquid.

If these towels still seem too good to be true magic, you can read more about them here.

2857d30c-min.jpeg

go solid:

You’ve heard of shampoo bars, but what about bars of soap for cleaning?

Sea Witch Botanicals creates zero-waste home cleaning products like dish soap and produce wash in bar form.

Their soap bars are vegan, free of palm-oil, and are made with organic, fair trade oils.

I’m also really interested in their produce wash which was intended to help remove dirt, pathogens, and pesticides on produce without leaving any residue behind.

You can get 15% off your first order with the code ‘letsgozerowaste’!

33ea06df.jpeg

while in the kitchen:

keep it real:

I know a lot of us are cooking almost every meal at home so keep it real around the dinner table.

Use cloth napkins, real plates, and real cutlery. You eat three times a day which means you can make a huge impact with your choices three times a day.

I wanted to round up a few of my favorite small businesses that create cloth napkins and ceramics!

IMG-7458-2_1800x1350.jpg

when washing up:

The first thing I do when I come home after taking Nala on a walk or heading to the grocery store is head straight to the kitchen sink and wash my hands! I don’t think I’ve ever been more vigilant about washing my hands than I have been in the last six weeks.

Plaine Products is one of my favorite zero-waste brands, and I’ve been a fan for over three years! You can read all about a blog post I wrote My Top Five Zero Waste Shower Essentials from 2017.

It’s been awesome to see their line expand from just liquid shampoo and conditioner to hand wash, lotion, and even a skincare line.

Their products are non-toxic and vegan and sold in aluminum bottles that you can send back to be sanitized and refilled.

Check out Plaine Products Hand Wash and use the code ‘GZW20’ for 20% off

76cc128c-min.jpeg

choose plants:

It’s no secret that one of the best ways to have a positive impact on the environment is to eat fewer animal products. Try adding a few plant-based meals to your diet. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out my blog post What I Eat in a Day 1 and What I Eat in a Day 2.

Beans are flying off the shelf and are a great plant-based source of protein. Here are a few of my favorite simple plant-based meals.

My favorite way to cook dried beans is in the crockpot. Place them in the crockpot, cover with a few inches of water, place on low and in 8 hours, you’ll have perfect beans!

tanushree-rao--OCfbcUtpHw-unsplash-min.jpg

while in the bathroom:

choose to refill:

Whether you’re lathering up your hands or your hair, and let’s be honest, you’re lathering up your hands A LOT more these days, Plaine Products has you covered.

I talked about Plaine Products a little earlier in this post, but I also wanted to mention that they sell travel-sized bottles which is perfect if you’re traveling, but also if you want to sample their products!

When it comes time to refill your full-sized bottles, make sure you hold onto your plastic pump! , Plaine Products is so serious about refilling that the plastic pump is a separate item, but don’t worry it is free with your purchase if you need one.

Plaine Products is also a member of 1% for the planet so you can feel good about a portion of each sale going back to charity.

Check out Plaine Products Shampoo and Conditioner Bundle and use the code ‘GZW20’ for 20% off

2b77d229-min.jpeg

ditch disposables:

If you’ve been following my blog for a while then this next item should come as no surprise. One of my favorite zero-waste swaps that saves me so much money as well as reduces a lot of waste - my safety razor!

This Rose Gold Safety razor will be your poshest bathroom accessory, but beyond its dashing good looks safety razors prevent a ton of plastic trash from going to the landfill.

This rose gold beauty comes from Eco Roots  a zero waste store that sources all of their products sustainably, and they ship in recyclable and upcycled materials - completely plastic-free!

As a bonus, a portion of each sale is donated to Ocean Conservancy.

Check out the Rose Gold Safety Razor and get 15% off using the code ‘GZWRAZOR’

save water:

You’ll probably hear me talk a lot about my bidet over the next few weeks. With toilet paper shortages, bidet sales are skyrocketing and I can’t say I’m mad about it.

Americans flush 27,000 trees down the toilet every day. (Scientific American) Which is A LOT of trees, and while on the surface using a bidet might seem like a waste of water, you have to keep in mind that it takes 37 gallons of water to make a single roll of tp.

By using a bidet, you’re not only are you saving trees; you’re also saving water. Justin and I have managed to reduce our toilet paper usage by more than 60%.

I think the bidet is one of the most underrated zero waste swaps. We’ve installed both a Brondell and a Tushy and we love them both.

For more information on bidet attachments check out this post

Classic-Bamboo-3_970x970.png

choose comfort:

My last swap in the bathroom has to be my period panties.

I think that most of my favorite zero-waste swaps are bathroom related. For it being the tiniest room in the house, it can certainly be wasteful, you know?

I’ve been a Thinx customer for five years now, and they’re officially my go-to period product!

They are so much more comfortable than pads. They look just like regular undies, but they absorb up to two tampons worth of blood depending on the style. I have a whole guide comparing and contrasting every style of Thinx offered.

They're super comfortable, cute, and I never have to worry about leaking! Plus, I love how the company prioritizes giving back. That's always something I look for when I make purchases.

Thinx was nice enough to offer the readers of Going Zero Waste $10 off if you use this link!

How+to+Have+a+Zero+Waste+Period+from+www.goingzerowaste-min.jpeg

while looking at the bigger picture:

switch energy providers:

A simple thing you can do while home is switch your energy provider. Companies like Arcadia Power and Clean Choice Energy are energy suppliers.

When you sign up, they work with your existing utility company to make sure all of the energy you use is supplied by clean energy sources. This doesn’t cost anything extra for you and in fact, you’ll probably see your electricity bill go down!

If Arcadia nor Clean Choice supply your area, a quick google search should turn up an alternative!

anastasia-palagutina-Vfd1Ztak8aQ-unsplash-min.jpg

support Ecocide law:

I first heard about Ecocide Law when I was researching ways for people to help with the bush fires in the Amazon that were burning last fall.

The goal is to add The Crime of Ecocide to The Rome Statute which is one of the most powerful documents in the world and is collectively known as Crime Against Peace. The law currently makes four crimes punishable in International Criminal Court.
1. The Crime of Genocide
2. Crimes Against Humanity
3. War Crimes
4. The Crime of Aggression

The goal is to add The Crime of Ecocide so people who are knowingly destroying the environment, which endangers all of humanity through climate breakdown, can be taken to court. You can learn more and I would encourage you to lend your support!

Sustainable and Cheap - 15 Self-Care Ideas

Is anyone else having a hard time? Feeling a lot of anxiety and stress? I know that my mental health has definitely taken a hit.

If you're feeling the same way, you’re certainly not alone. It's easy to be stressed and overwhelmed with the current state of affairs or what’s going on with our planet.

If you haven’t, check out my blog post 5 Tips for Dealing with Eco-Anxiety. I go over a few ways that you can help manage your anxiety and stress around these events that are somewhat out of our control.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

I’m not trying to downplay individual action because many of us can do small things that add up to a massive impact, but most of us aren’t currently in a position to make policy reform.

If you’re looking for more tips on how to incorporate sustainable practices in your life, be sure to check out my 31 Day Zero Waste Challenge.

I’m a bit shaken up right now, and I’m just trying to stay calm, relax, and wait it out - which is honestly a lot harder than it sounds.

So, I was thinking of a few inexpensive and sustainable ways that you could take your mind off what’s happening with a few self-care tips.

a warm drink:

I always like to start my day with a warm drink. I’m partial to a nice cup of tea. I prefer loose leaf tea because many tea bags can release millions of tiny plastic particles into your cup - yuck!

I typically brew my cup of tea in the early morning, and it’s nice to have that small bit of time to myself. It's nice to just to breathe, observe and check-in with myself. It's a great way to relax and start the day in a good mental space.

If you’re a tea drinker be sure to check out a few of my favorite sustainable tea brands.
If you’re a coffee drinker, I’ve got a great post on
how to brew a more sustainable cup.

Sometimes it’s also really nice to take around 10 minutes to brew a really nice specialty drink just for myself. Maybe a homemade hot chocolate or a matcha latte. Here’s a link to all of my favorite recipes.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

face mask:

For me, self-care is simply about taking a few extra moments to indulge. It’s taking a little bit longer. It’s about enjoying the slow moments and opening up space in my day to just breathe and be without worrying about what I have to do next.

And, nothing puts the brakes on my day quite like applying a face mask. It’s about 10 minutes of waiting and pausing.

Bonus points if you combine a few of these self-care ideas together. Maybe throw a few deep breaths and meditate while it's working.

I’m not a huge fan of sheet masks because they’re pretty wasteful. I prefer to make face masks from a few simple ingredients that you can whip up in your kitchen or buy masks that come in small glass jars.

The jars can be upcycled and reused. You can apply these masks with your fingers or a brush if you’re feeling extra luxurious. When you buy a face mask in a jar, you’re saving money in the long run.

This five pack of sheet masks costs $35. It is an organic and natural skin-care brand, but for a similar price point, you could buy a small jar and get way more use than just five applications.

Here are a few of my favorite face masks you can give a try.

take a walk:

It’s no secret that getting outside and connecting with nature reduces stress levels. If you’re having a hard time then put on a pair of tennis shoes and go take a walk.

It’s nice having Nala around because she always encourages me to get outside the house even when I don’t feel like it… And, after I go on a walk I always wind up feeling a lot better.

In fact, I’m planning on taking the old girl out as soon as I finish writing this blog post, and for her, that can’t come soon enough.

Check out my post on sustainable and ethical activewear.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

take a bath:

Now, I know that everyone thinks taking a bath is just wasting water, but depending on the size of your bathtub and the type of shower head you have, you might actually save water by taking a bath.

Before I switched to a Nebia Showerhead, if I were shaving, I’d save water by filling up my small bathtub.

Now, I only take a bath when I’m feeling super stressed out which is about a few times a year. I like to light a candle or two, and add in a few bath salts.

Bath salts are incredibly easy to make at home. I’ve got a wonderful recipe that’s easily customizable!

But, if DIY just isn’t your thing or you don’t have any Epsom salts lying around a friend gifted me a jar of Herbivore bath salts which I’ve really enjoyed!

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

deep clean:

If you’re feeling a little out of control, one thing you can do right now is clean. It’s great to see immediate progress being made in an area that you manage.

Cleaning is on the top of my self-care list.

I like to make my own cleaners because it’s better for both my health and the health of the planet. Plus it’s super easy and cheap!

A lot of conventional cleaning products are irritating to both the nose and throat due to artificial fragrances, volatile organic compounds (the same building blocks that create smog), and other toxic ingredients.

Most conventional cleaners are also packaged in plastic and many of them aren’t biodegradable meaning they won’t break down in nature.

Here’s a complete guide to eco-friendly cleaners.

If there’s a real nasty bug going around your house, then I recommend ditching the vinegar and instead of putting non-diluted 70% isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle both of which have been given a green light by the CDC.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

declutter:

Similarly to cleaning, now is a great time to declutter. There’s something so refreshing about cleaning out an old drawer or cabinet and reevaluating what you truly need.

Now, you might think that decluttering is in complete opposition to a zero-waste lifestyle, but I would challenge that. Figuring out what we truly need allows us to share and redistribute our resources.

I wrote all about this in my post How to Declutter - The Zero Waste Way!

When it comes to decluttering, you don’t have to spend a dime. In fact, it’s one of the few ways you might be able to put a little extra change in your pocket, if you’re able to sell any of your items.

I personally like to send my gently used clothes back to ThredUp.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

dance:

Few things bring me more joy than putting on a favorite tune and dancing away. Whether you’re a dancer or not crank some tunes and move your body!

You don't have to be good, you just have to start. This one practice always puts me in a good mood and gets me out of my head. It stops negative self-talk right in its tracks.

One of my favorite tunes to jam too is anything Abba. What about you?

read a book:

Reading is one of my favorite past times. Last year, for our anniversary my husband installed a hammock in my office. It’s the best place to snuggle up with a good book. I love to just relax and slowly sway.

I like to get lost in either a fiction book or read about topics I’m interested in like sustainability. If you’re interested in living a more sustainable lifestyle you should check out 101 Ways to Go Zero Waste.

If you’ve already read that one, here’s a list of sustainability books I love.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

call a friend:

If you’re feeling down or lonely, pick up the phone and call a friend or family member. I know that I always feel better after chatting with my mom or one of my best friends.

To make this a double whammy, combine a few of these self-care tips. Talk with your loved ones while you’re taking a walk. Fresh air, being outdoors and good conversation. This always makes me feel good.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

stretch:

Similar to dancing or walking, getting your body moving is a great way to take care of yourself and feel good. To quote Elle Woods, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands, they just don't.”

One of my favorite apps is downdog. They offer several different types of movement like HIIT, Yoga, Barre etc. but their standard yoga is free to use. I like to use this when I wake up in the morning or before bed.

If you don’t want to download another app there are plenty of stretching and yoga YouTube videos.

watch an old favorite:

Speaking of Elle Woods, tune into one of your favorite movies or TV shows. I don’t like to binge watch when I’m not feeling super great. Sometimes, it can feel a little unhealthy lying down and not moving for hours. This tends to increase my anxiety and stress on the backend.

I like to watch a favorite movie because most movies have a very specific beginning and end where TV shows can suck you in for HOURS. I love TV shows too, just be cautious and maybe set a more strict time limit.

If you’re looking for any good documentaries, here are a few sustainable documentaries that I recommend.

Sustainable, ethical and cheap 15 self care ideas from www.goingzerowaste.com #selfcare #sustainable #cheap #free #selfcareideas #wellness #takecareofyourself #pamperyourself #athome #inside

meditate:

This is one of the self-care strategies I need to get better about. I know that it's one of the best things I can do for my mental health.

I talked about meditation quite a bit in a recent post 10 Health and Wellness Habits You Should Adopt for the New Year.

I really like using the app calm for meditation. They do have a few free ones you can do, but I’m not a huge fan of guided meditations. I prefer just to sit with the ambient noise and have the bell chime every five minutes.

take a class:

Learning a new skill is a great way to improve yourself which I think is the ultimate form of self-care. If you’re looking to expand a new hobby then you should definitely check out Skillshare.

I myself have a great class on Sustainability Basics. It’s 50 minutes long and I would love for you to give it a watch! You can get a two-month free trial using my link skl.sh/kathryn.

What I eat in a day | Zero Waste, Plant-Based, Quick Easy Meals

It’s been about two years since I’ve done a ‘What I Eat in a Day’ blog post and I thought it was time to do another one plus a little YouTube video.

If you didn’t know, I have a YouTube channel and I would love for you to hit that subscribe button.

Most of my meals are quick, easy, and plant-based since eating a plant-based diet is one of the best ways to have a positive impact on the environment.

Since I live a zero-waste lifestyle, I buy most of my food without packaging. If you’re curious to learn more, check out my blog post The Ultimate Guide to Zero Waste Grocery Shopping.

What I eat in a day, zero waste and plant based from www.goingzerowaste.com #zerowaste #plantbased #whatieatinaday #receips #plantbasedrecipes #veganrecipes #ecofriendly #sustainable #sustainability #ecofriendly
This post was sponsored by MegaFood! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
For more information, please see my disclosure policy.

I like to start my day at 6 am because that’s when I feel the creative energy buzzing through my bones.

I like how peaceful everything seems early in the morning. No one expects me to respond to emails or comments or interact in any way because the world is still a little sleepy.

pre-breakfast:

This is when I get the bulk of my writing done, but before I’m off to type away I like to brew a huge batch of loose leaf tea, drink a glass of water, and take my supplements!

Last year, I started looking for more sustainable supplements, and have been really pleased with MegaFood®, which crafts premium supplements made with real food from trusted farm partners, plus added nutrients.

MegaFood is a certified B Corporation, which means they meet a strict code of social and environmental practices.

They have a very impressive roster of certifications like non-GMO project verified, certified glyphosate residue-free, tested for 125+ pesticides and herbicides, as well as many others.

MegaFood is committed to organic and regenerative agriculture, lobbying to ban glyphosate, and all of its employees are paid a fair living wage. I’ve been very impressed with the company’s commitment to people and the planet.

In today’s busy world, the ultimate self-care routine can be as easy as taking a daily multivitamin.

The multivitamin I take on a regular basis is MegaFood Multi for Women, which is specifically for women seeking optimal health and wellbeing* with vitamins B, D, A, C and E, plus iron, biotin, and beta carotene.

I’m often so busy so making sure I take my daily multivitamin is the best way I can take care of myself!

Along, with my daily multi, I’ve also found it useful to take probiotics, and a vitamin B supplement.

If you’re eating a vegan or plant-based diet, you really should be taking at least a B12 vitamin (MegaFood has a great option for this vitamin, too).

I have struggled with a hormone imbalance in the past and find it beneficial to take a B complex. If you have any questions about what supplements you should be taking it’s best to consult a doctor to see what’s right for you.

So, while my tea is brewing, I take my supplements and drink a glass of water. I pour my tea into a thermos, add in a little bit of CBD oil, and then sip on it throughout the morning.

breakfast:

I typically start to get hungry around 9 or 10 so I’ll whip up some breakfast and I really like to eat oatmeal in the winter. And, my all-time favorite this time of year is apple, cinnamon oatmeal.

  • 1 apple peeled, cored, and cubed

  • 1 teaspoon of oil

  • Cinnamon

  • Pinch of salt

  • 1/2 cup of organic old-fashioned oats

  • 1 cup of nut milk (I like cashew)

  • Maple syrup (optional)

  • Peanut butter (optional)

  1. In a small saucepan add your oil and apple and sauté until the apple is softened

  2. Add in a dash of cinnamon to taste and set aside

  3. Add your nut milk into the pot and bring to a simmer

  4. Add in the oats and let them absorb the liquid about 5 minutes

  5. Add a pinch of salt

  6. Sometimes I like to add in a splash of maple syrup or a spoonful of peanut butter at this stage too.

  7. Add your oatmeal to a bowl and top with your cinnamon apples and enjoy!

lunch:

I really like to keep lunch simple. I prefer soups or salads - things that can easily be prepped in advance and stored in a 16oz mason jars.

I’ve recently been on a curried carrot and ginger soup kick. It’s one of my all-time favorites!

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil + a little more for drizzling

  • 2 large shallots, peeled and chopped

  • 6 cups vegetable broth

  • 2 pounds carrots chopped

  • 1 peeled and cubed apple

  • 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger

  • 3-4 tablespoons of curry paste

  • pumpkin seeds (optional)

  • cashew yogurt (optional)

  1. In a dutch oven add in the olive oil and shallots

  2. Wait until the shallots are translucent and add in the grated fresh ginger and curry paste and sauté for about 30 seconds

  3. Add in the carrots, apple, and the vegetable broth

  4. Bring the vegetable broth to boil and cover the pot until the carrots are fork-tender

  5. Add the mixture to a blender and puree.

  6. Pour into a bowl and add in a few tablespoons of cashew yogurt.

  7. Top with some pumpkin seeds and a little drizzle of olive oil.

snack:

I have a few different snacks I like to keep on rotation which you can read about in my Five Favorite Zero Waste Snacks, but today I’m going with bell peppers and hummus.

dinner:

While I like to keep breakfast and lunch pretty similar, dinner is where I switch things up. I like to make taco bowls, burgers, nachos, salads, bowls, etc.

But for dinner, I wanted to keep it pretty simple. I think it’s a big misconception that zero-waste meals have to take a long time, they really don’t.

And, one of the best ways to save time is to cook once and eat a few times. So, if I’m making veggies and quinoa for dinner tonight then I’ll make extra and save it for later. You can read more in my post about meal prepping.

  • Roasted red cabbage

  • Black beans

  • Roasted sweet potatoes

  • Brown rice

  • Arugula

  • Avocado Lime Dressing (Avocado + lime juice + cashew yogurt + salt)

Toss everything into a bowl and eat up!

dessert:

I’m a huge lover of chocolate so I’m finishing my day with a few squares of organic dark chocolate!

late evening:

I often have trouble falling asleep, but after establishing a really good nighttime routine it’s really improved. I’ve reduced tech use right before bed, keep the bedroom phone free, and like to wind down with a cup of herbal tea.

MegaFood has team members who are experts when it comes to health and wellness. Erin Stokes, a naturopathic doctor and Medical Director at MegaFood, shared a lot of great insight on nutrients and botanicals to help you sleep, which has been super informative.

During the evening along with my tea, I’ve been taking the new Herbal Sleep supplement from MegaFood, which is formulated to provide a sense of relaxation and restorative sleep.*
