Thinx Review: I Tried Every Style of Thinx Period Panties

Thinx has a number of different styles of period panties! It can be difficult to know which one will work for different flows or days so I went to the challenge of trying them all!

I’ve tried all of the different types and ranked them in these 5 categories.

Before I dive into each pair, I want to briefly talk about my cycle so you can get a feel for how I’m judging and rating each of the pairs. My period lasts around 5-7 days but it can last for 10.

I’ve struggled with a hormone imbalance for years and talk about it more in this post 10 Ways to Take Care of Yourself When You’re on Your Period.

I typically wear one pair of Thinx and then change every 24 hours as you do with your normal underwear. Only on extremely heavy days do I maybe change once every 12 hours.

I originally bought 3 cheeky, 2 sport, 2 thongs and that lasted me pretty much my whole period although sometimes I would need to wash my first pairs halfway through or would wear some cloth pads over my Thinx for my heaviest days.

Super Hiphugger

• Holds 4 regular tampons worth of blood

• I only wear on Day 1 

• Works very well! Meant to be used alone without anything else

• Quite a bit bulkier than the other pairs but very comfortable 

Hiphugger

• LOVE. THEM. One of my favorite pairs. 

• Holds 2 tampons worth of blood

• Wear Day 1-7

• According to the website, these are meant to be used as backup to something like the cup or a tampon, but I wear them alone and have for years

• Very slim, lots of colors and the best part about the colored undies is that they’re lined with black so you don’t have to worry about staining or at least seeing the stains on the inside. Occasionally they cut in a little at the thighs, but it’s not so bad that I’ve stopped wearing them.

Sport

• 1½ regular tampons' worth.

• Wear on day 4-7

• I think they work well, I’ve had my pair of sports for almost four years now

• They fit well, but they’re definitely a little cheeky. Not as cheeky as the cheeky’s, but cheeky none-the-less. 

• I really like how slim they are and it’s nice that they don’t have the lace on the top

Hi-Waist

• Absolutely one of my favorites! They’re the undies that I like to sit on the couch with, binge watch Netflix, and eat chocolate…. I really want to write a blog post about ethical and sustainable chocolate! (but really it’s just an excuse to eat chocolate…..)

• Holds 2 regular tampons worth

• Wear any day 1-7

• I think they work really well, and probably one of the sexiest pairs of undies I own. 

• They are VERY high-wasited. I wear a lot of high-waisted pants and these still poke out the top of my pants so I tend to wear them with dresses

Boyshort

• Holds 2 regular tampons worth

• Any day 1-7

• I’m normally very hesitant about boy shorts but these are a bit longer. I honestly, wish that they had two extra inches on the bottom so I could wear them with dresses and prevent chaffing where my thighs touch. Depending on how tall/short you are they might prevent chaffing, but I’m a little too tall I think.

• I really like to wear them at night… and also lounging on the couch with a tee in summer.

Cheeky

• NOT my fav

• Holds 1 regular tampons worth

• Day 4-7

• I’m not a big fan of cheeky anything, but when Thinx first started (I’ve been a fan for SO long!) They only had four options. 

• These are VERY cheeky… almost uncomfortably cheeky for me. I have a very round booty and cheeky things have never been my style, so I’m not sure why I thought it would be any different with these. However, if you like cheeky undies then you’d probably like these. 

Thong

• ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM. 

• Holds ½ a tampon worth

• Day 7 and pretty much any time that I’m wearing light-colored clothes that show panty lines. 

• I love these, I own 10 pairs and LOVE that they offer them in beige. I wear these as just my favorite thongs. It’s so nice to know that if I randomly spot and I’m wearing white pants, that I’m completely covered. I think they’re so, so comfortable. 

Air

• Holds 1.5 regular tampons worth

• Day 4-7

• They work really well, but honestly would only wear them towards the end of my period they’re so thin it makes me a bit nervous. 

• I love how breezy they are. They’re great for wicking moisture and are very, very light and a bit stretchier than other pairs. If you want a pair that offers fuller coverage and doesn’t have hard panty lines - this is the pair for you!

Organic Cotton | Briefs

• LOVE THESE!! 

• 2 tampons worth of blood

• Day 1-7

• These are one of the most comfortable pairs of undies I own. They’re very breathable. They’re a bit thicker but also softer they’re very similar to the BTWN

BTWN

• LOVE THESE!! 

• Holds 3 teaspoons - which is about the equivalent of 2 tampons worth of blood

• Day 1-7

• These are one of the most comfortable pairs of undies I own - period. They are a little thicker in the gusset, but they’re all organic cotton. But, the main reason I love them is that they’re quite a bit cheaper. You can get 3 pairs for under $50 with my discount code. 

• I wear M in the adult and wear 15/16 in the tween. They can be a little tight in the thighs depending on how bloated I am, but they’re still my favs.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Tea Brands

Are you an avid tea drinker? I love a good cup of tea. It might surprise you to learn most tea bags are made from plastic. A new study found that the bags can release BILLIONS of plastic particles into your cup. Yum…

One of the best ways to avoid your tea being steeped with a side of polypropylene is to pick up a blend from your local bulk food store or tea house, but for those who don’t have a bulk food store, I’ve rounded up a few sustainable tea brands to sip on.

Beyond the bag, have you thought about where your tea is sourced? Is it sustainable, organic, biodynamic? What’s the impact your tea has?

arbor teas:

Love loose leaf tea but want it delivered in sustainable packaging? Arbor Teas is way ahead of you.

pukka:

I've tried Pukka tea, and I was not disappointed. They have so many options to choose from and they’re relatively easy to find in stores.

I really love how their tea bags are plastic-free and tied together with organic cotton, making them 100 percent compostable. Not to mention they only use organic, ethically sourced ingredients to make their teas.

It’s important to use organic ingredients because organic farming greatly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, combats climate change and provides a habitat for wildlife.

I really love how they have teas for whatever is ailing you, or blends created with a specific purpose in mind. There are specific teas to help with digestion, women’s issues, cleansing, relaxing and so much more.

The best part is this tea company does so much to help the environment: Pukka is 100 percent carbon-neutral, sends zero waste to landfills, and is a certified B corporation. This means Pukka makes an ongoing commitment to meet high standards of transparency, accountability, and performance.

Pukka also donates 1 percent of all their turnover directly to environmental projects through 1% for the Planet.  In 2016 alone they donated $520,000 to environmental charities!

yogi:

Yogi teas are so easy to find in your local supermarket or health food store!

The teas come in a cardboard box which is printed using vegetable-based inks. Each tea bag is wrapped in a compostable paper wrapper, which is amazing. Plus, the actual tea bag itself is fully compostable! 

After you’re done drinking your tea, you can plop the bag right into your compost pail. Isn’t that what dreams are made of?

Not to mention the ingredients are great too – they only use organic ingredients and a vast majority of their teas are USDA certified organic. 

Yogi tea is also Non-GMO project certified, and they never use any artificial ingredients in their teas. Everything is of the highest quality.

They also use organic rooibos leaf from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in 7 of their tea blends. Products with the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal help conserve wildlife and natural resources, along with safeguarding the rights and well-being of workers.

There are so many tea blends to choose from at Yogi. I really recommend their pure green tea though – it wakes me right up every morning and tastes delicious!

I also adore how each tea box comes with a yoga pose to try. Plus, there’s always an inspirational message on their paper tags – too cute!

bigelow:

I really love this brand of tea. My folks buy it all the time and it’s really easy to grab at the supermarket.

Bigelow’s tea bags, string and paper tag are all 100 percent compostable. The box it comes in is cardboard and compostable too. 

However, the tea bags do come in a foil wrapper, which is trickier to recycle. Here’s an overview of their packaging and how to properly recycle or compost each part.

Bigelow’s tea ingredients are all-natural, but not always organic. They do have some certified organic teas, but those are harder to find on grocery store shelves.

Still, almost all their teas are part of the Ethical Tea Partnership, an organization that works with tea growers to establish responsible conservation of the world’s tea fields and the people working in them.

Bigelow is also a certified B corporation, meaning they’re all about accountability and transparency, protecting the environment and supporting communities.

Bigelow has even achieved zero waste to landfill at all three of its facilities by reducing, recycling and composting. That’s a huge accomplishment!

Not to mention they’ve installed 870 solar panels at their Connecticut headquarters. Each year, the solar panels produce about 200,000 kWh, which is equivalent to the energy needed to power a home for 16 years!

Personally, I really love their classic green tea and chamomile blends. Those are always my go-to’s!

numi:

It’s not too hard to find Numi in the tea aisle. Good thing too because this brand is amazing!

Numi makes a point to use organic ingredients in all their teas, and real ingredients without any artificial flavorings. 

Conventional teas tend to be blended or sprayed with artificial flavorings that leave a perfumey after taste – yuck. Thankfully, Numi never does this.

Numi’s packaging is also something to applaud: They use recycled cardboard outer packaging that’s made of 85 percent post-consumer waste and printed with soy-based inks. 

They don’t use plastic shrink wrap either. Instead, they use natural, biodegradable filter-paper tea bags rather than nylon tea sachets. 

Similar to Arbor Teas, they also participate in carbon offsetting. Numi monitors and reports the carbon impact of everything they do to Carbon Fund. Since 2011, they have offset over 6 million pounds of carbon through the purchase of carbon offsets that support renewable energy projects.

Another thing I love about Numi? They're a B-certified corporation, making them a purpose-driven company that benefits shareholders, employees, the community and the environment.

If that’s not enough, they’re also fair trade certified. This guarantees farm workers are paid living wages and treated right.

Numi has a lot of different products to choose from, but I recommend sticking with their tea bags or loose leaf tea for the least amount of waste.

choice organic teas:

I see Choice Organic Teas at my health food store a lot. Perhaps that’s because they have some pretty impressive wellness teas to choose from.

It’s great how all their teas are made using organic ingredients, so you can trust what you’re drinking is of the highest quality. Plus, as stated earlier, organic farming is very important for biodiversity!

To seal the deal, they use unbleached, paper fiber tea bags. These tea bags are folded then sewn instead of being glued or stapled. Then, they’re placed into envelopes and put into boxes made from 100 percent recycled paperboard printed with plant-based inks. This makes their packaging biodegradable!

I also really love the fact this brand is certified organic, fair trade certified, Non-GMO project verified and packed in the U.S.A. 

Not to mention they match 100 percent of their facility’s electricity use with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) purchased from 3Degrees. This means they’re helping build a market for renewables worldwide!

The Fastest and Easiest Way to Remove Labels From Jars

I have a few glass jars. Ok, I have more than a few…. It’s more like hundreds of glass jars. One side effect of going zero waste is that your accumulation of glass jars increases exponentially!

It’s just a fact of life. And, to be honest, a great way to reduce the emissions produced by glass transport is to reuse your jars! You can read more about that in my post Which is Better for the Environment: Glass or Plastic?

But, when it comes to reusing jars, I personally prefer to take the labels off. It gives the jar a much cleaner look which means I’m way more likely to use it. It can be used as a drinking glass, vase, store dry goods in the pantry or even leftovers in the fridge.

Getting labels off can be a little tricky so I want to share my full-proof way of getting your jars clean and sparkly. If you’d prefer a video demonstration, I’ve got you covered below!

how to remove labels from jars:

Things You Need

• jars with labels on them

• boiling water

• baking soda

• dish soap

Step-by-step

1. Put your kettle on and bring the water to a boil

2. Pour boiling water into the jars and then wait around 5 to 10 minutes

3. The labels should easily peel off at this point leaving behind lots of glue residue

4. Create a paste of baking soda and dish soap. It’s not an exact measurement, but 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda plus a few pumps of dish soap should work.

5. Stir the baking soda and dish soap together until a smooth paste is formed. Continue adding more dish soap or baking soda until you get a good consistency.

6. Apply the mixture to the glass jars. It doesn’t have to be an even coat, but do the best you can to spread it around the full jar.

7. Let the jars sit for a few hours or overnight.

8. Wash the paste off and VOILA! Clean jars 

That’s it! It’s that simple.

Now comes the hard part… trying to find the right lids to go with your upcycled jars. I always joke that I spend 80% of my time talking about zero waste living and the other 20% looking for the right lid to go with my upcycled jar.
